HISTORY OF KALLITHEA SPRINGS RHODES
Legend has it that people have been coming to Kallithea Springs since 7th century B.C. to experience the water’s therapeutic properties. While the island was under Italian occupation in the early 1900’s they brought more attention to the area.
They built the Rotunda and surrounded it with pebble mosaics. In 1930, over 200 scientific specialists and doctors even came to visit Kallithea Springs in Rhodes to study the medicinal effects for themselves!
Unfortunately, during World War II the Germans turned Kallithea Springs into a prison. Shortly after, it experienced a resurgence once Rhodes became part of Greece and was featured in several international and Hollywood films.
However, it wasn’t until the last 10 years that Kallithea Springs Rhodes was renovated and restored to its former greatness. All of this history and more can be seen inside the stunning Kallithea Springs Rotunda!
Today the area no longer offers thermal attributes, but it’s still a great place to see history and the beauty of Rhodes. It’s surrounded by two five-star hotels and is now a popular place for weddings and other events.
SWIMMING AT KALLITHEA SPRINGS BEACH
Now for the best part! Kallithea Springs is not the white sandy beach you might be used to, but instead a colorful collection of pebbles and rocks that lead into the water. We knew we would be spending hours here from our very first glimpse of the ocean at Kallithea Springs!
The long slender enclave of water is surrounded by rocks with ladders that lead down to the ocean. Above these rocks are sets of lounge chairs, a cafe, beach bar, and endless spots to lay out in the sun. Simply put, Kallithea Springs beach is paradise!
We recommend packing a snorkel as the water is crystal clear. If you’re lucky you can see everything from schools of fish to other sea creatures. Pick up goggles at any of the beach shops on the island or even the local supermarkets.
